Wolfsburg have announced on their official website that they have parted company with defender Arne Friedrich with immediate effect.
The Germany international had a contract with the Bundesliga side until the summer of 2013, but the centre-back's deal has now been dissolved at his own request.
"Arne Friedrich approached us with the request to terminate his contract. We obviously rue his decision, but we want to wish him all the best for the future," head coach Felix Magath commented on the 32-year-old's departure.
The defender joined Wolfsburg from Hertha in the summer of 2010, but injuries have prevented him from making an impact at the 2009 Bundesliga champions.
Friedrich underwent surgery on a back problem for the second time back in June and has since been working on his recovery process.
In his time with the club, he made 15 Bundesliga appearances, but had yet to feature in the 2011-12 campaign.
