Hoffenheim coach Holger Stanislawski wants to cut a rejuvenated Schalke down to size when the sides meet in Gelsenkirchen this weekend.

The Royal Blues have moved up to third in the table since Huub Stevens took charge, but Hoffenheim have won their last two games and Stanislawski sees no reason why they cannot throw their hats into the ring for a place in the Champions League next season with a win at the Arena AufSchalke.

"The wins in the cup against Cologne and previously in the league against Monchengladbach have given us the self-confidence to be able to win there," said Stanislawski in quotes reported by Kicker magazine.

"We want to continue our positive trend."

A win on Saturday could take Hoffenheim from eighth in the table to as high as second while Bayern Munich's defeat at Hannover last weekend means the title race is wide open once again.

Even defending champions Borussia Dortmund - labelled a 'crisis club' just a few weeks ago - are now just one win away from the summit.

They travel to fifth-placed Stuttgart on Saturday with both sides currently in a rich vein of form.

Fourth-placed Hannover is also on course for another successful season, despite being knocked out of the DFB-Pokal in midweek.

They can move a step closer to the knockout stages of the Europa League next Thursday, but before their trip to Copenhagen, they travel to Borussia Monchengladbach, who are just one point but three positions behind them in a very tight top eight.

Elsewhere, Bayern entertain Nurnberg in a Bavarian derby and Wolfsburg host Hertha Berlin.

Saturday evening's game is between Mainz and Werder Bremen while Cologne's clash with Augsburg and Hamburg's first home game under their new coach Thorsten Fink against Kaiserslautern are scheduled for Sunday.

The weekend commences with Bayer Leverkusen coach Robin Dutt's return to his former club Freiburg on Friday night.

"This game has an importance from my Leverkusen point of view and a significance from my Freiburg past, but the importance outweighs the significance by a mile," said Dutt.

"I have never had so little contact with Freiburg as I have had this week."

German Bundesliga Preview

Bayern Munich's 10-match winning streak may come under threat at Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Jupp Heynckes' side have not dropped a point after losing 1-0 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach in their season opener and will enter the trip to the Wirsol Rhein-Neckar Arena this weekend full of confidence.

A 2-0 win over Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday outlined just how much of a threat Bayern will be in that competition this season and new signing Manuel Neuer extended his run of clean sheets to an amazing ten.

The statistics indicate that this will be another Bayern win but Hoffenheim, who sit fourth, are capable of putting up a stern challenge.

Holger Stanislawski's side have been impressive in front of their home fans this season, notching wins over last season's champions Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg, and will benefit from an extra three days recovery from their opponents.

But stopping the likes of Mario Gomez, who has scored 12 goals in 11 matches in all competitions this season, and wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben will not be easy, meaning Hoffenheim will need to be at their absolute best to stop Bayern's winning run.

Also on Saturday, Dortmund host the struggling Augsburg just three days after they travel to France to play Marseille in the Champions League, but the depth of Juergen Klopp's squad should ensure they get past the newly promoted side.

Monchengladbach are this season's surprise packets, sitting third, and they will fancy their chances going to second-from-bottom Freiburg, while Nuremburg are at home to Mainz.

Bayer Leverkusen have dropped their last two league matches in disappointing fashion to rivals Cologne and Bayern, meaning their home match against Wolfsburg takes on extra significance.

The late kick-off sees Hertha Berlin host Cologne.

Friday's match sees Kaiserslautern, who have won just once this season, at home to Stuttgart while on Sunday second-placed Werder Bremen travel to Hannover and lowly Hamburg host Schalke.

Bayern Munich's Karl-Heinz Rummenigge Confirms Interest in Borussia Dortmund Playmaker & Arsenal Target Mario Gotze

The Bundesliga giants have made it clear that they are closely monitoring the playmaker's situation and stress that his current club may not decide what his next move will be.

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has rubbished suggestions that Borussia Dortmund will be the ones to determine where Mario Gotze's future lies.

Borussia Dortmund supremo Hans-Joachim Watzke recently stated that there is no chance that Gotze would leave the Bundesliga champions for another German club, but Rummenigge refuses to rule out the suggestion that the 19-year-old will ply his trade at the Allianz Arena in the future.

"Those kinds of comments are quite remarkable. There are three parties involved in a transfer. It remains to be seen whether the player agrees with him," Rummenigge was quoted as saying by Sport Bild.

"There's no doubt about it that Mario is a fantastic player. He fully deserves all the recent praise. He not only plays very spectacular, but is also quite efficient.

"And we all know that Bayern have a preference for players who represent Germany at international level..."

Gotze has a contract until the summer of 2014 with Borussia Dortmund and was a target for Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

Louis van Gaal in Talks Over Vacant Hamburg Job

Former Bayern Munich boss Louis van Gaal is in talks with Hamburg over their vacant coaching position, according to a report from Sport1.

The northern outfit have recorded only one point in their first six Bundesliga games, which prompted the club to part company with head coach Michael Oenning on Monday.

Now the Dutch trainer has reportedly been speaking with club chiefs in a bid to iron out a deal which would see him take over the struggling side.

The 60-year-old has been out of work since being sacked by the Bavarian giants in April after two seasons at the helm. During his time at the Allianz Arena, he led Bayern to a league and cup double in 2010, as well as an appearance in the Champions League final.

Van Gaal also has previous coaching experience with Ajax, Barcelona, AZ and the Dutch national side, but another former Netherlands boss, Marco van Basten, remains in contention for the Hamburg job.

German Bundesliga Review

Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga with their fifth straight win after seeing off Schalke 2-0.

Nils Petersen and Thomas Muller scored the goals for a Bayern side who did not even need to move out of first gear to beat the Royal Blues, who succumbed to their second straight defeat.

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, making his first return to the Arena AufSchalke since his summer transfer between the two clubs, was nothing more than a spectator for 90 minutes, as he had been as a young boy on the terraces of Gelsenkirchen's Park Stadion.

In Sunday's other game, Hannover struck twice in the last five minutes to win 2-1 and condemn Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund to a third defeat of the season.

Dortmund looked set for their first away win of the campaign on the back of Shinji Kagawa's well-taken 63rd-minute strike.

But with four minutes to go Karim Haggui struck an equalizer and Didier Konan then kept his cool to win it in the dying seconds.

The result means Dortmund have lost three of their opening six games after waltzing to the title last season.

On Saturday, Lukas Podolski inspired Cologne to a 4-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in Stale Solbakken and Robin Dutt's first Rhineland derby in charge of the respective local rivals.

Podolski created Cologne's first goal for Milivoje Novakovic just before half time before scoring the second just after the interval.

Podolski's second and Cologne's third sealed the win in the 54th minute before Simon Rolfes grabbed a consolation for the home side.

Andre Schurrle was sent off late on before Mato Jajalo completed the scoring with Cologne's fourth deep in stoppage time.

Borussia Monchengladbach climbed to second in the standings for 24 hours with a narrow 1-0 victory at rock-bottom Hamburg.

Igor de Camargo headed home the game's only goal in the 66th minute to send Lucien Favre's side level on 13 points with Werder Bremen.

Nurnberg fought back to secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw in horrendous conditions against 10-man Bremen.

Heavy rain made playing conditions almost impossible and the visitors were hardly helped by the early dismissal of goalkeeper Tim Wiese.

Mehmet Ekici put Werder ahead against the run of play but Philipp Wollscheid earned his side a deserved point with his second-half goal.

Hoffenheim kept up the pressure on the leaders as two goals from Roberto Firmino guided them to a 3-1 victory over Wolfsburg.

Former Liverpool forward Ryan Babel opened the scoring after 20 minutes before Brazilian Firmino doubled the lead three minutes later.

Ashkan Dejagah pulled one back before Firmino struck again four minutes from time, after Wolfsburg goalkeeper Marvin Hitz was sent off for abusive language.

Kaiserslautern came from behind to win their first Bundesliga match of the season, beating local rivals Mainz 3-1 at the Betzenberg.

Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting gave the visitors the lead after a quarter of an hour, but an own goal from Bo Svensson brought the home side level within 10 minutes.

Itay Schechter put the Red Devils in front in the 54th minute before Christian Tiffert sealed the win in the 73rd minute.

Augsburg survived the late dismissal of Sebastien Langkamp to hold on for an decent 2-2 draw on the road at Hertha Berlin.

Hajime Hosogai fired the visitors into the lead in the first half but goals from Christian Lell and Tunay Torun early in the second period put Hertha in the driving seat.

Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker's strike on 64 minutes secured a point for the promoted side, although they endured a nervy final few minutes after Langkamp saw red for a professional foul on Raffael.

On Friday night, Martin Harnik scored twice as Stuttgart gained a 2-1 victory at Freiburg.

The Austria forward netted in each half to put the visitors firmly in control, Papiss Cisse's 85th-minute effort coming too late for the hosts.

German Bundesliga Preview

Schalke's new captain Benedikt Howedes says his predecessor Manuel Neuer deserves a warm welcome from the Royal Blues' fans when he arrives at the Arena AufSchalke with his new club Bayern Munich this Sunday.

Neuer, who was born in Gelsenkirchen and grew up watching from the terraces at the club's former Park Stadion, made a controversial switch to the Bavarians in the summer.

He returns to the Arena for the first time this weekend and Howedes hopes he is given the reception he deserves, even though he knows it is unlikely.

"I think he is going to have to expect some whistles and he knows that, but I still believe that Manuel does not deserve any animosity," he told Kicker magazine.

"He always performed really well, if not sensationally for us."

And Howedes does not expect his side to gain any advantage if the fans do jeer Neuer each time he touches the ball.

"Manuel will not lose his concentration," he predicted. "He has always made great saves when he is under particular pressure."

Sunday's encounter is the highlight of this weekend's Bundesliga program, which starts off with a Baden-Wurttemberg derby in Freiburg.

They host Stuttgart, who would move up to third in the table with three points.

Werder Bremen can move to the top of the pile on Saturday when they travel to in-form Nurnberg, who have won their last two matches, while Borussia Monchengladbach also have the chance to reach the summit with a win at crisis club Hamburg, who have yet to win all season.

Augsburg has yet to win a single game in the Bundesliga since their promotion to the top flight and they will hope to break their duck with a trip to the capital on Saturday.

However, they meet a Hertha Berlin side who are full of confidence after beating defending champions Borussia Dortmund last weekend.

Dortmund, meanwhile, are not in action until Sunday when they travel to Hannover.

Elsewhere, Hoffenheim host Wolfsburg and Kaiserslautern entertain Mainz in one of three derbies this weekend.

The other takes place at the BayArena, where Bayer Leverkusen lock horns with Cologne.

German Bundesliga Preview

Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath has been given a vote of confidence ahead of their meeting with his former club Schalke this weekend.

The Wolves have made a dismal start to the season with three straight defeats leaving them in the wrong half of the table, but Wolfsburg chairman Francisco Garcia Sanz believes Magath will put things right eventually.

"We have faith in Magath," he said. "He has always managed it in the end.

"Even during his first spell with us, we did not instantly challenge at the top of the table."

Magath led Wolfsburg to the Bundesliga title in 2009 before moving to Schalke, whom he led to the runners-up spot a year later.

However, things did not go according to plan last season for the Royal Blues who, despite reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League, struggled in the league.

Magath left with just a few months of the season remaining and was installed as coach of Wolfsburg less than 24 hours later.

Sanz is standing by his decision to reappoint Magath, with whom the club celebrated their greatest success.

"We have started to reconstruct a successful team," explained Sanz. "Thanks to people like Christian Trasch, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Hasan Salihamidzic or Patrick Ochs, we will soon see a real team again."

Schalke fans have seen the formation of a successful team over the last few weeks with three wins in a row taking them into second place, behind Bayern Munich on goal difference.

Magath's era is well and truly a thing of the past in Gelsenkirchen.

"It does not play a role for me," said their new coach Ralf Rangnick to the Revier Sport newspaper.

"We are not playing against Felix Magath but against Wolfsburg."

The Royal Blues may have a three-point deficit to make up by the time they take to the field at the VW-Arena on Sunday.

League leaders Bayern host Freiburg on Saturday afternoon while Werder Bremen, who are below Schalke only on goals scored, host northern Germany rivals Hamburg on Saturday evening.

Fourth-paced Hannover travel to Stuttgart with fifth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach entertaining Kaiserslautern.

The defending champions Borussia Dortmund can also move ahead of Schalke with a win over Hertha Berlin while Bayer Leverkusen have the chance to move to the top of the table tomorrow night when they travel to Augsburg.

Finally, Mainz welcome Hoffenheim to the Mainz Arena and Nurnberg travel to Cologne.

Bundesliga Weekend Preview

Borussia Dortmund defenders Neven Subotic and Marcel Schmelzer have recovered from their injuries and could play against Nuremberg on Saturday, coach Jurgen Klopp told reporters.

Klopp said while both players had completed training sessions this week it was still unclear whether they would be in the squad.

"Let's wait and see how they handle the last training sessions," he said.

Nuremberg will travel to Dortmund for Saturday's game without their goalkeeper Raphael Schaefer who underwent surgery on Friday to repair a loose tendon in his shin.

The Nuremberg captain was expected to be out for six weeks, the club said. "Unfortunately the operation was unavoidable," club official Martin Bader told reporters.

Schalke 04 central defenders Benedikt Howedes and Kyriakos Papadopoulos, who featured in Thursday's 2-0 defeat to Helsinki in their Europa League play-off first leg, missed training on Friday but are expected to be fit for their league game against Mainz 05 on Sunday.

Coach Ralf Rangnick said Hoewedes had some pain in his neck while his Greek defensive partner had picked up a knock in his thigh.

"We assume both will be ready to play in Mainz on Sunday," Rangnick said.

Bastian Schweinsteiger Targets Champions League Final With Bayern Munich

Bastian Schweinsteiger says Bayern Munich are desperate to make an impact in the Champions League in 2011-12 and stated that they have set their sights on making it to the final at the Allianz Arena.

The German giants made it to the same stage in 2010 when they were beaten 2-0 by Inter, while the Italians proved to be too strong in the round of 16 last term.

Nevertheless, Schweinsteiger is aware of the fact that they have to qualify for the group stage of Europe's elite club tournament first and admitted that the road to the final is long.

"It is our goal to qualify for the Champions League final in Munich. However, we know that it won't be easy. We have to qualify first. We don't have any influence on who will be our opponents in the play-offs. Nevertheless, I think that our upcoming opponents have more reasons to be disappointed than we with the draw," Schweinsteiger said to Goal.com.

"I think that we can go a long way once we've managed to progress to the group stage. We don't feel any pressure to go all the way though. We dream of making it to the final and it's our objective, but we realise that it's still a long way to go."

The midfielder then went on to discuss his side's domestic ambitions and made it clear that Bayern want to regain their Bundesliga trophy.

He added: "The domestic trophies are very important for us. Everybody expects us to win the Bundesliga again this year. That won't be easy though and we have to take it one game at a time."

Bayern start the 2011-12 Bundesliga campaign with a home match against Borussia Monchengladbach on August 7.

German Bundesliga 2011/12 Season Preview

The Bundesliga, Europe’s best attended league, kicks off its 2011/12 campaign without its best player of last season, Nuri Sahin, who left champions Borussia Dortmund for Spanish giants Real Madrid at the start of the summer. And it has been a summer of change in Germany, albeit mainly managerial. The most significant have seen Jupp Heynckes swap last year’s runners-up Bayer Leverkusen for Bayern Munich, replacing Louis van Gaal at the Allianz Arena, and Robin Dutt come in to take Heynckes place in the Rhineland.

However, there is another change of note, this time in the table itself as for the 2011/12 season Germany now has four Champions League spots after overtaking Italy following Werder Bremen’s victory over Sampdoria in last year’s qualifying round for the tournament. This means for the first time in its history, three teams will qualify automatically from the Bundesliga, with the fourth going into the final round of Champions League qualifying, making the battle in the upper echelons even more intense.

Will Borussia Dortmund retain the title they won so impressively last season? Bayern Munich have strengthened and have not gone more than one season without getting their hands on the Bundesliga trophy since 1996, when the winners were, perhaps tellingly, Dortmund. FC Augsburg

A tough campaign lies ahead for Augsburg given that the teams which just missed relegation last year, the likes of Borussia Monchengladbach, Schalke, Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen, will be considerably stronger this season.

Led by Dutchman Jos Luhukay, Augsburg have lost important players in Kees Kwakman and Ibrahima Traore, but have brought in a number of other performers to fill the gaps created by their departures. Patrick Mayer and Sascha Molders should add a goalscoring threat whilst Edgar Davids’ cousin Lorenzo Davids will marshal the midfield. Avoiding relegation will be a big ask though.

Bayer Leverkusen

The signing of prolific youngster Andre Schurrle from last season’s surprise package Mainz will go some way to offsetting the huge loss of midfield dynamo Arturo Vidal at the BayArena, even though the forward is not a direct replacement for the Chilean.

But it is in defence where Leverkusen needs to improve after conceding twice as many goals last season as champions Dortmund. Their lack of reinforcements in this area, combined with the retirement of Sami Hyypia, means that though the club should challenge for the Champions League, it is hard to see them sustaining a push for the title at the very end.

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich will be favourites for the title this campaign and are determined to regain the Bundesliga title from Borussia Dortmund. The signing of flying Brazilian full back Rafinha will see Philip Lahm move to the left, solving one of the club’s problem positions, whilst another – goalkeeper – has been remedied by the capture of Manuel Neuer from Schalke. Jerome Boateng has also arrived from Manchester City, strengthening the defence further.

Jupp Heynckes lands for his third spell as manager and should restore some order to the club. With the talents of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben going forward, no team can match the Bavarians’ attacking talent, but beating Dortmund to the title will take more than craft. Can Heynckes create the team spirit required to lift the Bundesliga?

Borussia Dortmund

The loss of Nuri Sahin to Real Madrid will harm Borussia Dortmund’s attempt to retain the title, but the return from injury of Japanese starlet Shinji Kagawa, as well as the precocious talent of Mario Goetze, means that the champions have plenty of creativity going forward still. Robert Lewandowski and Lucas Barrios should ensure that Jurgen Klopp’s men score an abundance of goals next season, but it was not just the Ruhr side’s attacking flair which brought them the title.

Dortmund’s defence was one of the best in Bundesliga history. And with Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic lining up again at the heart of backline in front of Roman Weidenfeller and a number of additions to the defence and midfield, Dortmund will at the least go very close to keeping their crown.

Borussia Monchengladbach

Monchengladbach finished 16th to face the relegation playoff last season but survived after a dramatic defeat of Bochum. It will be a tough task to stay in the Bundesliga again this campaign however, with a number of players leaving.

Die Fohlen have reinforced with untested players from abroad, such as Japanese starlet Yuki Otsu and Australian Matthew Leckie. Michael Bradley returns from his loan spell at English Premier League outfit Aston Villa and whilst Matthias Zimmermann is promising at the back, Monchengladbach will have to be fight hard if they are to have a chance of staying up.

SC Freiburg

At the Dreisamstadion Marcus Sogg steps up to manage the first team to fill the void created by Robin Dutt’s departure for Bayer Leverkusen. Freiburg will hope this turns out to be a good move as they look to repeat last season’s mid-table finish. Papiss Cisse’s superb goalscoring form last year was key to their ninth place feat, but the side are too reliant on the Senegalese, who scored more than half their Bundesliga goals.

If Garra Dembele can adapt to Germany after scoring 26 goals in 24 games for Bulgarian giants Levski Sofia last season, he could relieve the pressure on Cisse. Elsewhere Beg Ferati will add solidity at the back. Freiburg fans should be able to look forward with optimism, but a European push may just be beyond them.

Hamburg

Having lost Dutch internationals Joris Mathijsen and Ruud van Nistelrooy to Malaga, Hamburg have been looking to strengthen and have raided Chelsea for a number of players, aided by the club’s new sporting director and former Blues man Frank Arnesen. In come youngsters Jacopo Sala and Gokhan Tore in addition to English defender Michael Mancienne.

With Marcus Berg back from a loan spell at PSV Eindhoven and Jeffrey Bruma also arriving, Hamburg have made some useful additions all over the pitch, though they have also lost some key men. Seeing both Piotr Trochowski and David Rozenhal leave will weaken the northern German giants. Last season Hamburg were comfortable but never threatened the European spots. A similar 2011/12 campaign awaits.

Hannover

Hannover’s remarkable campaign last year almost saw Die Roten beat Bayern Munich to a Champions League spot. Repeating that trick will be an ambitious task for the club, but they have held onto their key players and look set to challenge well in the top half of the table again.

Having achieved a large amount on a small budget, and after spending relatively little again this summer, whether Hannover can repeat last year’s remarkable achievement with a small squad whilst competing in Europe is open to question, but they should at least be in contention for European qualification. The addition of Christian Pander from Schalke threatens to be good business if he can stay fit.

Hertha Berlin

The club from the capital should have a reasonable chance of staying up after winning the 2. Bundesliga title last season to bounce straight back after relegation in 2009/10. Hertha Berlin have brought in Bayern Munich duo Thomas Kraft and Andreas Ottl and while the pair are not good enough for title challengers, they should be good additions for a team at the other end of the table. Also a boost is the return of Brazilian defender Kaka from Braga after the 30-year-old played a key role in their run to the Europa League final.

In promising forward Tunay Torun and defenders Maik Franz and Peter Niemeyer, Hertha have made intelligent signings and even in an increasingly competitive league should be able to scrape to safety, though it might have to be via the relegation playoff.

Hoffenheim

Hoffenheim’s remarkable stay in the Bundesliga lasts a fourth season, but may be challenged after the loss of manager Ralf Rangnick last year. In a bid to strengthen the village club have signed a number of players, including Fabian Johnson from Wolfsburg and Stuttgart’s Sven Shipplock.

Last year Hoffenheim finished above the quartet of Wolfsburg, Werder Bremen, Stuttgart and Schalke, all of who will be expected to be competing at the other end of the Bundesliga this season, which means the Rhein-Neckar-Arena outfit could by default find themselves scrapping for their lives at the wrong end of the table.

Kaiserslautern

Kaiserslautern pulled off a significant coup earlier this summer by beating a whole host of teams in Italy and England to the signing of promising Israeli forward Itay Schechter, also bringing in Hapoel Tel-Aviv team-mate Gil Vermouth at the same time.

Having survived following promotion the year before with a storming finish to the 2010/11 campaign, the 1998 champions have lost prolific forward Srdan Lakic and the creative Jan Moravek, so pressure will be on the Israeli pair to replace the duo’s attacking prowess. Christian Tiffert’s quality in the middle of the pitch will be crucial too if Kaiserslautern are to repeat last season’s performance and stay clear of relegation.

Koln

After dispatching manager Zvonomir Soldo following a disastrous start to the season, Koln rallied to finish 10th under Frank Schaefer last year. He has now been replaced by Stale Solbakken, the man who led Danish champions FC Copenhagen into the Champions League Round of 16.

With Milivoje Novakovic and Lukas Podolski, Koln have firepower up front, but are perhaps too reliant on the pair. Their summer signings have been right back Sascha Riether and promising forward Odise Roshi. Koln may struggle in an increasingly competitive Bundesliga, but should have enough strength throughout the side not to be caught up in a serious relegation tussle.

Prediction: 14th

Mainz

Mainz were the season’s surprise package last year, coming fifth in the Bundesliga and qualifying for the Europa League in the process. It was a remarkable campaign which started in blistering fashion for the team from the Rhineland. But they have lost three of their best players; Lewis Holtby and Christian Fuchs have left for Schalke, whilst Andre Schurrle has moved to Bayer Leverkusen.

Highly rated coach Thomas Tuchel has had a tricky summer trying to improve a decimated squad and many questions will need answering this season. Can Deniz Yilmaz fulfil his potential? Will Zdenek Pospech be able to make the transition from Denmark? Malik Fathi is a good capture from Spartak Moscow, and Eugen Polanski, who was at the club initially on loan, is a fine midfielder. Eric Choupo-Moting was not prolific last year with Nurnberg and only time will tell whether Tuchel has adequately replaced the vast attacking talent he has lost.

Nurnberg

Nurnberg had a good 2010/11 Bundesliga, finishing sixth, just outside the European spots. Hopes are high that another good season can be enjoyed by the Franconian side, but the losses of on-loan playmaker Mehmet Ekici and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will be a blow. Der Club have made some promising signings however.

Timm Klose arrives from Swiss side FC Thun on the back of a superb campaign in the European Under-21 Championship and will add solidity in defence, whilst German Under-21 forward Alexander Eisswein should provide a goalscoring threat up front. If Markus Feulner and Daniel Didavi can replace Ekici’s crucial creativity in the final third, it could be another good campaign for Der Altmeister.

Schalke 04

Schalke will be hoping to return to the upper echelons of the Bundesliga after a strange season last time around. Their Champions League run was in direct contrast to astonishingly poor league form that saw relegation flirted with at points, but the Ruhr giants finished the season by winning the German Cup.

A promising start to this campaign has already been made, with Schalke winning the Supercup on penalties against Borussia Dortmund. On the transfer front the Ruhr side have lost Manuel Neuer and a summer of overhaul has also seen veterans Angelos Charisteas and Gerald Asamoah depart. Christian Fuchs and Lewis Holtby, prolific suppliers of goalscoring opportunities at last year’s surprise package Mainz, and Jan Moravek, after a fine season with Kaiserslautern, return.

Ralf Rangnick has had a pre-season with Schalke for the first time after taking over during the last campaign and the club should be able to improve. Ralf Fahrmann has replaced Neuer and was excellent against Dortmund, but goalscoring was Schalke’s problem last year; if Moravek, Fuchs and Holtby, in tandem with Juan Manuel Jurado, can provide the chances for Raul and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Schalke should challenge for a European spot.

Stuttgart

Stuttgart was another of Germany’s traditional big names to endure a tough campaign last season. A leaky defence was their undoing throughout the 2010/11 Bundesliga and addressing this problem will be the main focus for coach Bruno Labaddia coming into this term.

Defender Maza arrives from PSV Eindhoven, adding experience to the backline, but full back Philipp Degen has left, as has promising forward Sven Shipplock and midfielder Christian Trasch. With the talent at his disposal though, Labaddia should be able to push on this season after taking over midway through last term. If the former striker can get the best out of Zdravko Kusmanovic in the centre of midfield and shore up the defence, the side’s attacking prowess could see Stuttgart return to the top half of the table.

Werder Bremen

In addition to a number of astute signings, Werder Bremen have Brazilian defender Naldo back from his season-long injury which helped contribute towards a disastrous campaign last time around, also in part prompted by the sale of Mesut Ozil. If Marko Marin can find form and new signing Mehmet Ekici fulfil his potential, Werder may have the creativity that they lacked so often last season. Defensively the club have strengthened too, signing Sokratis Papastathopoulos on loan and bringing in Schalke’s Lukas Schmitz.

Strong challengers the year before last, Werder should be back in the top half of the table this time around. A serious challenge for the Bundesliga crown appears unlikely, but a European spot may not be beyond Thomas Schaaf’s side.

Wolfsburg

Like Werder, Wolfsburg experienced a nightmare 2010/11 campaign. English coach Steve McClaren failed to get the best out of his team and his successor Felix Magath could only just keep the Wolves in the Bundesliga.

Signing Kaiserslautern’s prolific forward Srdan Lakic should give Wolfsburg more bite in attack, and this is particularly crucial after they struggled up front last year, whilst the experienced Hasan Salihamidzic can only help the team so much. Creative midfielder Diego is still at the Volkswagen Arena, but is likely to go after falling out with Magath. The former Schalke and Bayern Munich boss is renowned for having an excellent first season at the teams he manages before falling off the next time around and Wolfsburg can at least look forward to a more secure campaign, even if they may struggle to hit the heights of two years ago.
