Manchester United will make a £23million bid for Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano as the Red Devils try to address their midfield problems.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is worried about the lack of protection his backline is getting and wants the 27-year-old to give his side more bite.
The Argentina international has a contract at the Nou Camp until 2014 but is frustrated about being played in defence and wants a return to his favoured position.
It is unclear whether he would welcome a move to Old Trafford having spent three years at rivals Liverpool.
Anfield fans were unhappy to see Mascherano go but he still holds the club dear to his heart and dedicated Barcelona’s Champions League win over United to the Reds.
“I know the Liverpool supporters were a little bit sad with me after my exit, this is for them as well,” Mascherano said.
Ferguson tried to sign Mascherano before he moved to Liverpool but was put off by the third-party ownership agreement.
With that now cleared up, the United manager will make his move after losing patience with Michael Carrick and Anderson following the 6-1 defeat by Man City.
